The Soggy Po Boys
The Charlottesville Jazz Society, The Bridge, PAI and WTJU present dixieland jazz band The Soggy Po Boys
On Thursday June 28th at 7:30pm, The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU will convert The Bridge, PAI into a New Orleans jazz club with the music of The Soggy Po Boys.
Born on a snowy Fat Tuesday night in 2012, the Soggy Po' Boys have been honing their craft of New Orleans' music in their home town of Dover New Hampshire. The Soggy Po' Boys mix brass-fueled mayhem with Meters-style old-school funk, and the Caribbean side of the New Orleans tradition. For their Charlottesville debut, this seven-piece band will revisit the music of their biggest influences: Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and Sidney BechetWhile steeped in tradition, the Po Boys are in the process of creating their own sound. With a repertoire of New Orleans standards, spirituals, contemporary music, and swing tunes, they offer a lively blend of impeccable musicianship, fun and danceable insanity. Smoke, the forthcoming studio release from the group, represents their first full-length recording as a septet. Eight new originals highlight the bands ability to transcend geographic boundaries by mixing a bit of their New England sensibilities with a large portion of classic New Orleans sound. Theyre also likely to throw in some unexpected cover tunes and jazz standards into their rollicking live performances as well.
The Soggy PoBoys are: Eric Klaxton- Clarinet/Soprano Sax; Zach Lange- Trumpet; Nick Mainella- Tenor Saxophone; Mike Effenberger- Piano; Stu Dias- Guitar and Vocals; Brett Gallo- Drums; and Nick Phaneuf- Bass
The cost is $15 general admission, $12 for paid supporters of The Charlottesville Jazz Society, and $10 for all students. Any tickets remaining at the door will be $25. For more information visit cvillejazz.org or call (434) 249-6191. Be sure to listen for music by The Soggy Po Boys on WTJU, 91.1 FM.
