An Evening of Music for Kora, Piano, and Voice
Tonight we present music for combinations of kora, piano, and voice. Included on the program is the premiere of "Scenes for Kora and Piano (Lincoln, Mass.)" by Trevor Berens, "Lazarus" (written for Trevor and Jessica Berens) by Jacques Burtin, and "Arsinei" (for kora and soprano) by Burtin. There will also be music for solo kora and solo piano included on the program.
From 5-6pm, please come and mingle. There will be wonderful appetizers and wine served by our generous hosts. The music will start at 6 and go until around 7pm.
After purchasing your tickets, I will send you the exact address of the concert. For planning purposes, the concert venue is about 5 minutes south of Lincoln Center.

Born in Paris, France, JACQUES BURTIN is a composer, improviser, writer and filmmaker. He plays the kora, the gravi-kora and the piano, and he has issued about forty CDs. Burtin conceives multidisciplinary shows, sound or video installations with musicians, painters, poets and dancers. He directs experimental films, cinematographic poems and art documentaries. His films What damns me saves me" and The Dialogue of Shadows" were screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2011 and 2012. LEnfant de la République ("The Child of La République") was screened at the Bilbao Short Film Festival Zinebi in 2015. Burtin teaches kora and gives masterclasses. Between 2002 and 2012, he conducted sessions of Initiation to Interdisciplinary Creation and Performance at the Fine Arts School of the University of Deusto (Bilbao, Spain) along with dancer and choreographer Alicia Gómez Linares. His latest works are Islands of Light for kora solo and Lazarus for piano and soprano. He is currently working on a multidisciplinary project based on the twenty-two Major Arcana of the Tarot of Marseilles. An homage to his late colleague, harpist Susan Allen, this project explores the creative act via improvisation.
TREVOR BERENS is a pianist, composer, and music therapist. He holds degrees from Loyola Marymount University (BA: Music and Psychology, specializing in piano and composition), California Institute of the Arts (MFA: Performer/Composer), and Lesley University (MA: Expressive Therapies, specializing in Music Therapy). His former piano teachers include Tania Flesicher, Peter Miyamoto, and Vicki Ray, and his former composition teachers include Paul Humphreys, Stephen Lucky Mosko, Mark Saya, and James Tenney. As a pianist, he enjoys playing in a variety of styles, including avant-garde classical music, traditional classical music, and free improvisation and as a collaborator, he enjoys working with a wide variety of individuals and ensembles, including solo vocalists and instrumentalists, chamber groups, dancers, and choruses. From 2006-2008, Trevor ran the Los Angeles Wholesale Orchestra, which commissioned and premiered multiple new works and he is now the founder of the Boston based new music group, Sonic Liberation Players. Currently, Trevor runs the Berens Voice and Piano Studio out of Lincoln, MA, with his wife, Jessica. He works as a music therapist working with young children and with the elderly. JESSICA TUNICK BERENS is a soprano with broad musical experience, performing music ranging from Medieval through recently composed pieces for her own voice. She has performed at the Skirball Arts Center, RedCat, the Ojai Music Festival, Long Beach Opera, the Beach Cities Symphony, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and the Greek Theater. In Graz, Austria, Jessica was a finalist in the prestigious Meistersinger competition. Jessica is a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts and holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts in vocal performance, is a Transformational Voice Institute certified voice teacher, and is also an accomplished violinist. Jessicas operatic roles include among many others, Susanna (The Marriage of Figaro), Philine (Mignon), Gretel (Hansel and Gretel), Adele (Die Fledermaus),and Pamina (The Magic Flute). Jessica is soprano section leader for the Halalisa Singers, Bostons World Music vocal ensemble. In addition to performing, Jessica has 11 years of early childhood music education expertise with infants through middle school and is musical director for a childrens theater in Arlington.
