A Far Cry in Santa Rosa
In "The Beauty of Strings" A Far Cry celebrates pure sonic happiness. Mozart's Divertimento #3 in F starts the program with an uplifting call to celebrate. Mozart's magical ability to create unforgettable melodies is on full display in the second movement, which also features some very personal, tender, even pained moments. The impish last movement brings the program to Grieg's Holberg Suite. Edvard Grieg (a Norwegian Romantic) looks to the Baroque for inspiration in creating a glorious set of dances, alternately playful and sorrowful, exhilarating and reverent. The concert concludes with one of the true masterpieces of the string orchestra repertoire, Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings. Tchaikovsky considered Mozart "the Christ of music," and the Serenade for Strings is his gift to the spirit of his idol. Glorious melodies, elegant dances, a heartfelt Elegy, and a distinctly Russian finale make up one of Tchaikovsky's greatest pieces. Tchaikovsky himself said, "I am violently in love with this work and cannot wait for it to be played."
