Summer in the City -- Glendale Edition
APA-Los Angeles is excited to kick off our 2018 Summer in the City event series with a tour of the City of Glendale! As the third largest city in Los Angeles County and one of the largest communities of Armenian decent in the United States, there are a lot of exciting new projects and planning in the works in Glendale, including arts and culture, technology cluster, green space, and more.
This tour will begin with a walking tour starting at the Philz Coffee shop to our first pit stop at CBREs office, an adaptive reuse of a former Masonic Temple. We will continue the walking tour towards the Citys Central Park to learn more about the cultural sites and green space planned along the area. The tour will also include a hop on the Glendale Beeline bus where we will pass through the site of the planned Space 134 freeway cap park project.
City staff and planning consultants will share insight into what made these transformative changes possible. We will visit the site of the future Armenian American Museum, the Glendale Central Park, Museum of Neon Art (MONA) Paseo, step into the newly renovated public library, and stroll through the Arts and Entertainment District. We will also see the Laemmle mixed-use housing development with a 5-screen art house theatre, as well as the historic Alex Theatre. Then we will walk through the Americana at Brand Glendales prime lifestyle center that comprises 82 retail shops, many top restaurants, one hundred condominiums and 242 luxury apartments, as well as a 2-acre park.
Topics of discussions will include, but not limited to, the following: Glendales recent development projects; Glendale Tech Strategy; Downtown Specific Plan, the vision for the Arts and Entertainment District, the proposed Space 134 freeway cap park; the impact of changing demographics on the communitys placemaking; the changing face of retail, arts and culture; and more.
The tour will conclude at the deck of the Katsuya Restaurant which offers a great view of Americana. After the tour, attendees are highly encouraged to visit MONA, or convene at a happy hour nearby and watch the World Cup (TBA).
Please come dressed in comfortable attire, bring sun gear (hat, shades and sunscreen), a water bottle, some cash for the city bus fare ($1 each way), and wear sturdy walking shoes (to walk for about 1 mile). The Summer in the City event series is where friends and families are very welcomed, therefore please feel free to bring companions, so you can show them how fun it is to be a planner! Speakers: Vartan Gharpetian, Council Member Philip Lanzafame, Community Development Director Kristen Asp, Priniple Planner Jay Platt, Senior Urban Designer Jennifer Hiramoto, Principal Economic Development Officer Cynthia Guzman, Principal, Estolano LeSar Advisors
