Spain-based flamenco ensemble Fin de Fiesta Flamenco is currently touring Canada and will lead a rambunctious and inclusive flamenco dance and guitar workshop perfect for those whove always wanted to give this expressive art form a try. Workshops are two hours long and will take place at the same time. For the last half hour of the workshops, the two groups will join together so dancers will have a chance to try their moves to live music, and the guitarists will have a chance to play for live dancers.
Barefoot flamenco Dance - Roundhouse Dance Studio Instructors: Fin de Fiesta Company artistic director Lia Grainger and company dancer Deborah La Caramelita.
This fun introduction to flamenco dance is done in your bare feet without the special shoes used to perform the percussive footwork characteristic of flamenco. Instead, this course focuses on marking steps, upper body, and arm and hand movements. We will learn how to dance to the unique rhythm or compas of flamenco, and how to listen to the music and improvise our steps based on what we are hearing. Most of all, we will learn how to use flamenco to express who we are and what we feel as individuals when we dance thats what flamenco is all about! This class is focused at the total beginner or those just starting out with flamenco, but of course, everyone is welcome.
Dance participants should wear comfortable clothing that allows movement. No shoes required
Introduction to flamenco guitar - Roundhouse Room B Instructor: Fin de Fiesta musical director/guitarist Dennis Duffin
Flamenco guitar maestro Dennis Duffin will lead and introduction to flamenco guitar, exploring the flamenco style or palo known as tangos. Hell take participants through a series of exercises and demonstrate basic flamenco chords, scales, and finger strumming and picking methods. Hell also talk about the basics of accompanying dance, so that participants are ready when they join forces with the barefoot flamenco dance participants
Guitar participants should bring their own acoustic guitar
