Peace and Hope
The Wheatland Chorale, under the leadership of Artistic Director/Conductor Eric Riley, will feature Randall Thompson's "The Peaceable Kingdom", an American masterpiece of choral music, as the centerpiece of April concert series. Inspired by the painting by naturalist Edward Hicks, depicting the scene described in Isaiah, Chapter XI, vs. 6-9, which begins: "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb....." Thompson selected various versus from the book of Isaiah with which to craft a choral sequence based on the unfolding of a dramatic narrative. This American classic is rarely heard on modern programs and the dynamic range of dissonance, rhythm, and choral "orchestration" brings the listener an unforgettable experience. The program is rounded out with the intricate polyphony of Renaissance masters Thomas Tomkins and Josquin des Prez as well as the stunning work "Musica animam tangens" by the very young American composer, Joshua Shank, Bob Chilcott's sensitive and hopeful "Canticles of Light" and the fascinating, contemporary musical adaptation of the prayer of St. Cecelia b American Jackson Berkey, "Arma Lucis".
