Community Alliance Fundraiser

This is an event to honor the founder and editor of the Community Alliance Newspaper and to introduce our current staff. In addition we will present the first Mike Rhodes Writer's Award and the Best Article award.

1. Introduction of Elsa Mejia, the new editor of the newspaper:

Elsa Mejia was named the newspaper editor in May 2018. Elsa is a Fresno State graduate with a BA in Political Science and Mass Communication & Journalism with ten years experience in journalism as a staff writer and editor for the Madera Tribune.

2. Introduction of Lourdes Medina as the Spanish Editor of the
Community Alliance Newspaper Spanish language section:

Lourdes Medina was named the Community Alliance Spanish section editor in September 2017. A Reedley College graduate with an A.A. in mass communication, she has 17 years experience in radio broadcasting and producer for Radio Bilingue and a content producer for the nation's public broadcasting system. She is an organizer with the Dolores Huerta Foundation.

Presentation of the Mike Rhodes Writer's Award to Richard Stone:

Richard Stone is the first recipient of the Mike Rhodes Writer's Award to be given annually to a Community Alliance writer. Richard will be recognized for his skill and ability to tell readers the stories of activists in the Fresno community and their work that had been ignored by the mainstream media.

Presentation of the Best Article award to Kayla Moon for her article: "Fresno's PD: The Most Dangerous Police Force in America?'

A talk by Mike Rhodes: "The Community Alliance in Today's Media Landscape"

Mike Rhodes was the Community Alliance co-founder,editor, writer,investigative business manager and distributor for 20 years. He is a peace and social justice activist, an advocate for the homeless and author of "Dispatches from the War Zone" a book chronicling the treatment of Fresno's homeless residents.
