John Wort Hannam, Christopher Ward & Shari Ulrich in Concert
Shari is taking advantage of both Alberta's John Wort Hannam ad LA/Toronto based writer Christopher Ward being out in the area to present a songwriter's in the round evening as part of her Trust Me series, bringing artists and writers she loves to to Bowen Island.
JOHN WORT HANNAM - It's a long, hard road figuratively and literally from a teaching job on southern Alberta's Kainai First Nation to singer-songwriting career with performances at The Kennedy Centre, The Smithsonian, and Trafalgar Square. From the Canadian prairies and the coulees of southern Alberta comes one of Canadas best folk/roots songwriters, John Wort Hannam. A Juno nominee, Canadian Folk Music Best Album of the Year Award winner and Winner of the Kerrville, Texas New Folk Song Competition, John is known for his unique take on the simple day-to-day dramas of common folk through songs that map the landscapes of both the human heart and this vast country of ours. CHRISTOPHER WARD - Christopher Ward has written songs for Diana Ross, Hilary Duff, Wynonna Judd, The Backstreet Boys, Tina Arena, Amanda Marshall, Roch Voisine and many others. His best-known song is the worldwide #1 hit for Alannah Myles, Black Velvet. He received the Juno award for Songwriter of the Year in 1990. In 1984, after a stint in the Second City Touring Company, Ward helped launch MuchMusic as Canadas first VJ. As a songwriter, Ward contributed twenty songs over four seasons to the soundtrack of the hit CTV series Instant Star, as well as writing songs for both Degrassi feature films, the new Degrassi The Next Class and Cirque du Soleils Banana Shpeel. His songs have been performed on Idol shows around the world. Black Velvet has also recently been featured on CBCs Battle of the Blades, NBCs The Voice, Fox hit comedy New Girl and Grand Theft Auto V. Wards has written three novels. His latest book, Is This Live? Inside the Wild Early Years of MuchMusic, published by Random House Canada in October of 2016.
SHARI ULRICH - Shari's 45-year career from Pied Pumkin through The Hometown Band and on as a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist has led to 23 albums, including collaborations with Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes (UHF), Barney Bentall & Tom Taylor (BTU), and the bluegrass band The High Bar Gang. Her work has garnered several Juno Award nominations and two awards, induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, and a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year. Her passion for songwriters sharing a stage has led her to produce the Bluebird North and SongBird North series for the SAC for over 21 years, both locally and nationally. She has lived on Bowen Island since 1993.
