GHOSTS OF THE RIVER WORKSHOP PRESENTATION
ShadowLight Productions proudly presents the first workshop presentations of GHOSTS OF THE RIVER, a new multidisciplinary shadow theatre work that tackles the highly charged and complex subject of the US/Mexico border by illuminating the lives of the people on both sides of the divide. This is a place where legitimacy and hope are only a river away.
GHOSTS OF THE RIVER marks Octavio Solis and Larry Reeds second collaboration after the highly acclaimed 7 VISIONS OF ENCARNACION, presented at Brava Theater Center in 2002. The project is inspired by Solis personal experience growing up in El Paso, Texas, and his recent extensive interviews with residents, immigrants (legal or otherwise), their families, law enforcement officers and immigration lawyers in the city. In 6 short Twilight Zone like vignettes, GHOSTS OF THE RIVER will bring shadowy figures and memories of Solis past to life through Larry Reeds original cinematic shadow casting method. GHOSTS OF THE RIVER will also feature art direction by Favianna Rodriguez, whose dynamic print work has been inspiring people and communities across the Bay Area and beyond. Long-time ShadowLight company member, I. Made Moja, will translate Rodriguezs design into magical shadow forms. GHOSTS OF THE RIVER will be co-produced by ShadowLight and San Joses leading Latino theatre company, Teatro Vision, where the work will premiere in the fall of 2009. San Francisco engagement will follow immediately at a venue to be announced at a later date.
GHOSTS OF THE RIVER workshop presentations will offer a sneak preview of this exciting project and a rare glimpse into the collaborative process of making unique shadow theatre. The presentations will be held at the Mission Cultural Center, 2868 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94110 at 8:00PM on May 16 and 17, 2008. Each presentation will be followed by a Q&A session with the artists and performers.

About the Artists: Larry Reed is the artistic director/founder of ShadowLight Productions and is a nationally and internationally recognized theatre director, filmmaker, and shadow master, who is a trailblazer in the contemporary shadow theatre field. In 1972, he founded ShadowLight Productions to nurture indigenous shadow theater traditions, and to explore and expand the possibilities of the shadow theatre medium. He is one of the first Westerners to have trained in the traditional Balinese shadow theatre (wayang kulit) and received the title of dalang, or shadow master. Reed invented an ingenious shadow casting method, integrating traditional shadow theater techniques with film, modern theatre and dance styles. Works using this method include In Xanadu, Coyotes Journey, Wayang Listrik, 7 Visions, The Wild Party, and Monkey King at Spider Cave. These and other works have been presented at theatres and festivals such as the Henson International Festival of Puppet Theatre, Spoleto Festival USA, and Walter Spies Festival in Bali, and have garnered Citations for Excellence from the International Puppetry Association and nominations for the American Theater Wing Design Award.
Octavio Solis is a San Francisco playwright and director. His most recent work, June In A Box, was presented at Intersection for the Arts in March, 2008. His works Lydia, Man of the Flesh, Prospect, El Paso Blue, Santo & Santos, and La Posada Magica have been produced at Denver Theatre Center, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Dallas Theater Center, San Franciscos Magic Theatre and Thick Description as well as many others. His new anthology, Plays By Octavio Solis has just been released by Broadway Play Publishing. He has also completed Prospect, an independent feature film, which he wrote and directed. Solis has received numerous honors and awards such as a NEA Playwriting Fellowship, the Roger L. Stevens award from the Kennedy Center and the Will Glickman Playwright Award.
Favianna Rodriguez is a printmaker and poster artist who collaborates with community organizations to develop art about social justice. Faviannas work spans from being Co-Founder of Tumis Inc., a bilingual design studio dedicated to global human rights that provides unique design solutions to promote social justice to being a co-Founder of the EastSide Arts Alliance (ESAA), a third world collective of artists and activists working to empower the Oakland community through art and culture. She is also the founder of Visual Element, a graffiti arts program at the ESAA that trains young artists in the traditions of muralism and graffiti for social change.
I. Made Moja is a prominent Balinese visual artist with a background in traditional ink and watercolor painting. His work has been shown internationally and is featured in numerous books on Balinese art and culture. Since relocating to the Bay Area, Moja has been creating puppets, designing sets, and performing with ShadowLight Productions, as Encarnacion in 7 Visions and as Coyote in Coyote's Journey. His painting exhibits have featured traditional Balinese themes as well as San Francisco sights and settings. He is also an active member of Gamelan Sekar Jaya, dancing a variety of traditional male roles and performing with the group at the Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar in June 2000.
