La Bayadère Suite and Other Ballet Favorites
La Bayadére" takes place in the Royal India of long ago. We are invited to witness the marriage of the great warrior Solor, to the Rajah's daughter, Gamzatti. The entire kingdom has come to join in the celebration, including the Shades, or Gamzatti's bridesmaids, and the beautiful Scarf dancers, who usher in various jewels as their gift to the happy couple. We are also joined by the couple's royal entourage, Nikya, Fakir, Aya, Manu and the lead Shades.
California Youth Ballet presents highlights from this lavish production choreographed by Marius Petipa with music by Ludwig Minkus. La Bayadere was first staged in 4 Acts and 7 Scenes in St. Petersburg Russia in 1877. As the original production is very elaborate and long, with very adult themes, we have taken some of the most famous excerpts and adapted them to our students.
