Musica Maestrale presents Hannah Penn in 'The Life and Works of Barbara Strozzi'
Barbara Strozzi, one of the few woman composers whose name is still known from the Baroque era, was an extremely prolific composer of secular vocal music. Her works are powerful, sensual, and dramatic, making her a towering figure man or woman of music in mid-17th century Italy. This program delves into the variety of her output, interspersed with the story of her life.
Musica Maestrale is honored to invite mezzo-soprano Hannah Penn to perform with us for the first time. She is a familiar face among Portland audiences, as she performs regularly with Portland Opera, Oregon Symphony, and Portland Baroque Orchestra, among many other groups. She is also a music scholar, and has studied the music of Strozzi intensively; she not only sounds fantastic singing this repertoire, but knows it intimately!
Ms. Penn will be accompanied by Hideki Yamaya on theorbo and Baroque guitar.
