You're invited to the HHRCs 30th Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting will be held Sunday, June 3rd at 12:00 pm at the Woodlands Club in Falmouth. In addition to a luncheon, the event will include the presentation of the HHRC's annual student and community member awards, programs and special events.
This year we are honoring two remarkable individuals with the Gerda Haas Award for Human Rights Education and Leadership:
Veteran Mt. Desert Island High School teacher Linda Gould is a founder of Downeast GLSEN (a chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network), Maine's first public school Gay-Straight Alliance faculty advisor, and a nearly quarter-century advocate for rural LGBT youth in Maine. Her leadership was instrumental in saving Rainbow Ball Weekend, a pivotal event for rural LGBT and allied youth, when it almost folded last year.
Chris Myers Asch is an educator and activist from Hallowell, who is a co-founder and Executive Director of the Capital Area New Mainers Project, which is a cross-cultural group that welcomes immigrants to central Maine and, using volunteer teams of local residents, works to create a thriving, integrated, multicultural community in central Maine.
The HHRC will also take time to remember the remarkable influence of Cantor Kurt Messerschmidt, who passed away late last year. Cantor Messerschmidt, a Holocaust survivor who escaped his captors while on a death march from Auschwitz, was a beloved member of Maine's Jewish community in Portland and throughout Maine, and was a wonderful friend of the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine.
Tickets are available individually for $40 per person, or for $375 for a table of 10.
