Dom Flemons in Santa Fe
"The coolest of auditory histories no matter what heritage you represent. -No Depression
A founding member of the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, Dom Flemons repertoire covers a solid century of American folklore, ballads, and tunes. An expert on the banjo, fife, guitar, harmonica, percussion, quills, and rhythm bones, Flemons is also a music historian, record collector, and lover of memorabilia (his collection is housed in the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill). Flemons is touring behind his latest full-length recording on Smithsonian Folkways, Black Cowboys, which pays tribute to the music, culture, and complex history of the Wild West. The first project of its kind ever attempted, Flemons songs and poems take the listener on an illuminating journey from the trails to the rails in the footsteps of thousands of African-American, Native, and Mexican pioneers. The recording is part of the African American Legacy Recordings series, co-produced with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
In 2005, Flemons co-founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops, which won a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk album in 2010. He left the group to pursue his solo career in 2014. In 2016 the Carolina Chocolate Drops were inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame and are featured in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. As a solo artist, Flemons has performed with the likes of Mike Seeger, Taj Mahal, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Guy Davis, and on stages as diverse as Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the Newport Folk Festival. In 2017, Flemons was featured on David Holts State of Music on PBS and performed as bluesman Joe Hill Louis on CMTs original hit television show Sun Records. A tireless music scholar, Flemons has published articles for the Oxford American, New York Times Magazine, Ecotone, No Depression Magazine and Mother Jones.
