Ron Miles at The TANK
Jazz Times calls Ron Miles is one of the finest trumpeters in jazz today. On Saturday, June 23, he brings his artistry to the sonic wonder called The TANK, a concert venue in and around a 65 foot water tank in Rangely, Colorado. Last year's Solstice Week Concert at The TANK was listed among the Concerts of the Year by The New Yorker Magazine, and this year Ron Miles brings an equally wonderful talent to this extraordinary space. Special reserved seating inside the Tank--for just 49 seats--will make for an amazing experience. A Meyer Sound speaker array will vividly broadcast the sounds to a larger audience under the Colorado stars.
The Tank is a unique arts venue in Rangley, Colorado--a tank, literally, an empty water tank discovered to have extraordinary acoustic resonance, a reverberation longer and richer than the Taj Mahal's. In 1976, Boulder sound artist Bruce Odland was shown the place by two Rangely locals and immediately knew that he had stumbled upon a treasure. "I'd never heard anything like it," he said. "I'd never heard a sound last that long, with these dizzyingly beautiful reverberation effects." For years after Odland's discovery, The Tank became a secret performance and recording space for a dedicated group of sound artists and musicians. At this point, The Tank Center for Sonic Arts is a fully-equipped recording and concert venue. The place has become a one-of-a-kind destination for artists, sonic explorers, and curious visitors who learn to listen in a whole new way.
Writing in the New Yorker after witnessing a performance in The TANK, Alex Ross was ecstatic. In my experience, he wrote, music has never seemed closer to nature. The Los Angeles Times covered the place in detail. Forget Carnegie Hall. Musicians rush to rural Colorado to play The TANK, was the headline. "One road to the musical future," wrote Alex Ross, "now runs through Rangely."
Ron Miles is a songwriter and cornet player based in Denver, Colorado. Ron was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1963 and moved to Denver with his family in 1974. Ron Miles has previously recorded as a leader for the Prolific, Capri, Gramavision, and Sterling Circle labels. He is one of the finest improvisers and composers of his generation and has been called one of the greatest melodists by clarinetist Ben Goldberg. In addition to leading his own bands, Ron Miles has performed in the ensembles of Joshua Redman, Bill Frisell, Mercer Ellington, Don Byron, Myra Melford, Joe Henry, Madeleine Peyroux, Jason Moran, Matt Wilson, the Bad Plus, Harriet Tubman, Ginger Baker, and Goldberg.
