Mahsa Vahdat: Born in Tehran in 1973, Mahsa Vahdat began learning music from an early age. She took piano lessons and received Persian singing instructions from various musicians in Iran. she also plays the Persian string instrument setar. She entered the University of Arts in Tehran in 1993 and graduated with a B.A. in Music. Since 1995 Mahsa has performed as an independent artist in concerts and festivals in Asia, Europe, the US, and Africa together with musicians from Iran, Europe and America. She has also appeared on stage as a solo singer or with her sister Marjan Vahdat. Following her participation in Lullabies from the Axis of Evil (2004), Mahsa started a long lasting collaboration with the Norwegian record label Kirkelig Kulturverksted (KKV), which led to a world wide release of a series of records. Since 2007 Mahsa is one of the ambassadors of Freemuse Organization, an independent international organization that advocates freedom of expression for musicians and composers worldwide. His music has been met by a huge volume of critical approval around the world. He has won the Norwegian Grammy Award (Spellemannsprisen) and numerous other awards and prizes, including the prestigious "Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik - Jahrepreis in Germany for his most recent album featuring the German-Afghan singer Simin Tander. His playing has formed a cornerstone in projects featuring some of the finest Norwegian singers, including Solveig Slettahjell, Silje Nergaard, Siri Gjære, and Kristin Asbjørnsen. The urge for individual expression fuses with acutely attentive listening in creative interplay, making Tord a very special experience both as a soloist and as an ensemble player. While relating to fields like Scandinavian folk music, gospel, Caribbean music and cool jazz alike, Tord's ensembles present a unique universe of lyricism and subtle funkiness. His way of melding jazz history with 'Nordic' reflective moods and lyrical beauty brings about an intriguing voice on today's music scene. Learn more: www.tordgustavsen.com
