Seattle has a relatively small African American population, so discussions about women and work tend to come from the perspectives of European American women. The Women's Movement of the 1970s presumed that women had to fight for the right to work outside the home. African American women, on the other hand, were always expected to work outside the home as well as within the home to hold together and support their families.
In this presentation of Poetry+Motion: Woman's Work, local African American poets and writers will be joined by the incomparable jazz/blues vocalist, Ms. Elnah Jordan and pianist Eric Verlinde. Ms. Jordan was awarded "Vocalist of the Year" for her performance as the legendary Bessie Smith in "The Evolution of the Blues" written and produced by Jon Hendricks of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. Later she starred in "Street of Dreams" an Off Broadway musical drama where she was awarded the prestigious "Cabaret Gold Award" for her stunning performance. Pianist Eric Verlinde has excited audiences worldwide with his energetic and passionate performances. His music touches the very soul of the listener. He has played with Arturo Sandoval, Randy Brecker, Eric Alexander, Terell Stafford, Mark Murphy, Luis Conte, Thelma Huston, Don Lamphere, Jay Thomas, Buddy Cattlet, Greta Matassa, and Luis Peralta. He is in high demand and is constantly performing, refining the sound and creating new music. His different groups create music that is pure, creative, spontaneous, superbly structured and melodic.
Together they will acknowledge the challenges and celebrate the triumphs of African American Women and their work.
