Moon Over Buffalo - a zany look at life and love in the theatre. This riotous backstage farce brought Carol Burnett back to Broadway in 1995, where it ran for 309 performances. It co-starred Philip Bosco as her megalomaniac husband and leading man. Carol Burnett was nominated for the Tony Award, Best Actress in a Play and Philip Boscowas nominated for theTony Award, Best Actor in a Play.
The show is set in 1953, the end of the era when great stars toured the country performing the classics in repertory, displaced by that new-fangled invention, television. But Charlotte and George Hay carry on - despite the dwindling audiences and their now-inappropriate roles as young lovers. Their motley company and crew are in Buffalo, NY for the summer, presenting Cyrano de Bergerac and Noel Coward's Private Lives, two very different plays. Fate (and a pair of tights) has given these thespians one more shot at starring roles in a Hollywood epic, and director Frank Capra himself is en route to Buffalo to catch their matinee performance. Will Charlotte appear or run off with their lawyer? Will George be sober enough to emote? Will the pregnant ingénue make it back from the doctor in time? Will Capra see Cyrano, Private Lives or a disturbing mixture of the two? What ensues is a breathtaking farce filled with twists and turns, collisions and mistaken identities, miscommunications and slapstick antics, exhilarating swordplay, and a set with five doors!
