YAT WORK: Transformation in Performance
Bay Area Weekend Intensive June 9 + 10, 10:30-4:30
JOIN US for a two-day weekend intensive for new students who want to investigate the vital muscularity of the Yat Work and for students who've been on hiatus and want to re-engage.
Long known in Europe, and just beginning to arrive in the U.S. trailblazer Yat Malmgren's life work offers a methodological and dynamic approach to the creation of character. Actors trained in the Yat Method include Oscar-winners Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, Sean Connery and Colin Firth, BAFTA Rising Star winner Tom Hardy (Dark Knight Rises), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Michael Fassbender (X-Men) among many, many other actors of stage and screen. Yat Work is also known as Movement Psychology and The Laban-Malmgren System of Character Analysis.
Structured for actors, dancers, writers, directors, teachers and dramaturgs of all levels, participants engage with Yat's unique, methodological approach to deep character transformation resulting in a measurable expansion of range and a palpable deepening of character development.
Through a series of building blocks Yat Work allows the actor to become unrecognizable and the writer to create characters with textured individual makeups. Where the American assumption is that we create character using the truth of who we are at the base, Yat Work allows an internal shift through the which the performer can become unrecognizable, able to experience the world through lenses that would not otherwise have been perceivable or available. It becomes the difference between a great actor who is always themselves playing a role and a great actor who disappears before the audience and can make way for a completely separate human being.
Physical work, text, character, voice, and movement cultivate depth of character and presence. Complemented by Tom's own developments the work meets each person exactly where they are, right now, and allows for rapid growth and shifts. Simple and profoundly transformational, what you learn can be utilized in your ongoing creative projects for years to come.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have been introduced to the major components of Yat's work.
