COOKING for PICASSO
To all of you Dames who enjoy a light summer read, here is our August pick. For those of you who are art fans, here is an event you should not miss. COOKING FOR PICASSO by Camille Aubray is an historical fiction story of 17-year-old Ondine who helps her mother cook in the family auberge in Juan-les-Pins. When a mysterious man moved into the town, using a fictional name and insisting on staying out of the public eye, he requested that his meals be made by the auberge and delivered to his rented painting studio. Ondine was delegated to deliver those meals. Then she was requested by the Patron to cook for him on-site. Naturally this evolves into a larger relationship - it was Picasso after all! The fictionalized interactions of models, cooks, townspeople and mostly Picasso himself are fun to visualize and the descriptions of the foods and the kitchen activities are fun, too. But first, we have the rare and fabulous opportunity to see up close and personal some Picasso works on paper at The Art Institute of Chicago. Mark Pascale, Janet and Craig Duchossois Curator of Prints and Drawings, has generously agreed to show us some of the AICs acquisitions and talk to us about Picasso, especially focused on some food paintings included in the collection. Following this discussion, we will walk across the street to Le Pain Quotidien for a light summer meal of the style Ondine and her mother might prepare for the Patron if they were doing that today.
