The Tragedie of Carmen is Peter Brooks treatment of one of Bizets well-loved operas; Carmen. The massive forces required to produce the full opera, with giant chorus, many small roles, and the principal cast, would normally prohibit BARN OPERA from producing this unbelievably famous work. However, Peter Brook has distilled the opera to the main storyline with only four major characters: The titular gypsy, Carmen (Internationally recognized mezzo soprano, Julia Mintzer), Michaela (Jessica Jane Jacobs, soprano), Don Jose (Joshua Collier, tenor) and Escamillo the toreador (Cailin Marcel Manson, Baritone) provide the necessary plot elements by maintaining all of the famous arias, duets, and ensembles that make this opera one of the most treasured pieces in the entire repertoire. This production will be anything but traditional, with a treatment and new translation by Joshua Collier, this production will be an edgy, sexually charged, contemporary tragedy.
