PRIDE OF DC: The Hyde Rugby Odyssey
PRIDE OF DC: The Hyde Rugby Odyssey WORLD PREMIERE Directed by: Jonni Masella 100 min (US) 2017
By infusing Hyde School's character philosophy with rugby's immense culture of brotherhood, Hyde Rugby opens up a broader concept of family for a local DC community where each individual is valued and embraced in the game and in life.
Faced with the reality of so many of our elected leaders who, through financial influence and/or self interest, are not fit to lead, where are we to turn?
Pride Of DC: the hyde rugby odyssey is a feature length documentary that tells the inspirational story of the first all African-American, high school rugby team. Filmmaker Jonni Masella captures the most intimate moments of the team experience as players struggle to learn an unfamiliar sport, only to find an extended brotherhood in the game of rugby, against the gritty backdrop of everyday life in Northeast Washington, DC.
At the center of it all is the DC local community and the 'character first education of Hyde Leadership Public Charter School. Embracing and working the schools philosophy of building character in students, as well as the adults who are setting examples for them, we follow the students' battles on and off the field, and see how all lessons learned can translate to success in the game of life, when we find the leadership we need in each other.
Aware of the myriad challenges facing young black males today, Pride Of DC: the hyde rugby odyssey shows us a positive portrayal of black youth rarely captured in todays media. The Hyde Rugby story gives voice to the inner city life of Washington DC., where from the shadow of our nations Capital a new paradigm of humanity as a global team comes into light.
