PANI: WOMEN, DRUGS AND KATHMANDU
PANI: WOMEN, DRUGS AND KATHMANDU NY PREMIERE Directed by: Raul Gallego Abellan 87 min (Nepal) 2017
The majority of Nepali female drug users are condemned to a life of poverty, suffering abuse by drug dealers, corrupt police officers and even male NGO workers. They endure discrimination and social rejection. Many end up trying to make a living as sex workers and have to rely only on themselves in order to survive.
Female drug addiction is an extreme taboo in Nepal, but a group of brave women will reveal their struggle to eradicate it, especially the cheap and dangerous drug called 'Pani', a cocktail of opioids which users inject directly into their veins.
Some manage to complete the hard journey of rehabilitation while others stay behind.
This film provides unprecedented and rare access to these hidden lives, resulting in a moving and intimate portrait of the harsh reality of female addiction and prostitution in their homes, the streets where they struggle to survive, and one of the few female rehab centers in Nepal.
This is the story about Bikens, Dolma, Yangzee, Debika, Annie...
