CDSM Ground Improvement at X-Ray Wharf, Apra Harbor, Guam Doug Schwarm, P.E., P.Eng.
Abstract: The US Navy's X-Ray wharf refurbishment project included a new sheetpile quaywall 10 m outboard of the WW II-era structure. Deep soil mixing was specified to mitigate liquefaction potential of the pluviated silty coral backfill. The case-history presentation focuses on recognition, diagnosis, and mitigation of unexpected displacements that occurred during ground improvement. Project success is a testament to collaboration and the value of technical expertise in the field.
Cognizant that we are entering, finally, the last throes of a Pacific Northwest winter, this presentation deliberately emphasizes photographs of bright blue lagoon waters and fluffy tropical clouds. Sure, the work was interesting too, and this displacement issue turned out to be technically quite meaty. But this is a light presentation appropriate for welcoming warmer and dryer weather.
Biography: Doug is Atlas Geotechnical's chief engineer and is usually found in their Santa Cruz, CA headquarters. Most of his clients are specialty geotechnical and marine contractors, so his practice focuses on geotechnical earthquake engineering, heavy industrial and marine structures, ground improvement, and excavation support. Registered in 7 states and one Canadian province, Doug's jobsites range from the western Pacific through Hawaii, up and down the US west coast, through the oil-and-gas parts of Canada, and out into the Northeast. The farthest west he has worked is Diego Garcia and the farthest east is Bonny Island, Nigeria.
