Nevenka / True Life Trio

Nevenka is delighted to announce a concert on Saturday, June 9, 2018 in collaboration with the Bay Area group True Life Trio. The evening will include guest appearances by Tzvetanka and Ivan Varimezovi.

Nevenka is a Los Angeles-based women's folk choir performing traditional music from Eastern Europe. Nevenka's repertoire includes songs from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Croatia, Albania, Russia, Greece, and Georgia, as well as Ladino Sephardic and Rom (Gypsy) songs.
The group was formed in 1976 by women who shared a common interest in the complex harmonies and compelling rhythms typical in Balkan music. Very much in the Eastern European tradition, Nevenka includes women of all ages making music together.

True Life Trio performs riveting vocal harmonies from Eastern Europe, the Americas, and beyond. This innovative trio explores the creative possibilities of cross-fertilization of different traditions with unlikely timbres connecting Bulgaria to the Bayou. TLTs improvisation-laced repertoire includes original songs and folk tunes from far-flung lands such as Albania, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Macedonia, Italy, Poland, Ukraine and the American South.

Tzvetanka Varimezova has been a teacher and mentor for both Nevenka and The True Life Trio. Ivan Varimzov is one of the most acclaimed gaida musicians in Bulgaria. The couple were both vocal/music directors and soloists for the Parardzhik, Thracian, Philip Koutev, and Radio Sophia Ensembles in Bulgaria. This year Tzvetanka received the award for Best Singer in Bulgaria.
