CAMILLE CLAUDEL Workshop of Act I
CAMILLE CLAUDEL, an opera by Dalit Warshaw with a libretto by Susan Gubernat, focuses on Claudel's development as a sculptor, whose talent emerged as bourgeois ideals regarding young women began changing in fin-de-siecle Paris, though not soon, nor completely, enough. Termed a "Woman of Genius," Claudel's ultimate fall from grace was a disturbing and tragic ending to a young, brilliant career. Her early successes were, paradoxically, nurtured by those who contributed to her ultimate demise: her mentor and lover, Rodin, could not provide the status and security of marriage, and her brother Paul Claudel's fervid moral condemnation led him to commit her to an asylum for the rest of her life.
Featuring Nancy Allen Lundy, Michael Kelly, Shelly Watson, Re'ut Ben-Ze'ev, Adam Flynn Emery and Jason Weisinger. Marc Peloquin is pianist, Victoria Bond conducts. Directed by Beth Greenberg.
Dalit Warshaw is a recipient of the OPERA America Discovery Grant for Female Composers.
