This year, THREE international duos take the stage in this one of a kind bilingual concert exploring the passion of Argentine tango music in English & Spanish. ABOUT US:
Dueling Tango Duos is an idea that came to life in 2016 with the help of the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) to bring together both non-Spanish speakers and Spanish speakers across cultures through the passion and beauty of tango music. First performed in 2016 with original players Duo Kitty-Raphael & Duo Fuertes-Varnerin, this playful concert (sung in a "dueling" call-and-response style) illustrates that even though we come from different parts of the world, we all express ourselves in a very similar way through song. This unique bilingual, bicultural experience showcases the history and beauty of this romantic genre of music in its original form and, with a bit of humor and grace, translated into English.

Duo Kitty-Raphael:
The instigators of this project, Pepe Raphael and Megan Yvonne (Kitty) came together through a mutual love of tango music. Both vocalists, they have been harmonizing together for the past 5 years. Originally from Madrid, Spain, Raphael has developed a prolific career entertaining in Portland and beyond with groups such as Pepe & the Bottle Blondes, Three Leg Torso, Seda, Pink Martini, and The Oregon Symphony. Yvonne began her tango music career in Portland with The Alex Krebs Tango Sextet and has since studied with some of the most influential tango musicians of our time in Buenos Aires. She currently leads her own Latin Jazz quintet, Pérola.

Duo Fuertes-Varnerin:
Residing in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Duo Fuertes - Varnerin elevate tango music to a new level of relatability and charm that has been missing since the days of old. Agustin Fuertes (vocals & guitarrón) and Ariel Varnerin (vocals & guitar) will draw you in with their infectious harmonies, danceable rhythms and authentic old world style. They have performed in cities across Europe & Asia since 2005. This will be their 2nd US tour.

Duo Oliver-Krebs:
Andrew Oliver (piano) and Alex Krebs (bandoneon) are local masters of Argentine Tango music. They have performed together for dancers at many social tango dances and have recorded several albums together. Their orchestra "The Alex Krebs Tango Sextet" includes members from The Oregon Symphony. Krebs owns also owns a local dance studio "Tango Berretin" where people meet to learn & share this passionate art form. Oliver, a professional pianist, grew up in Portland but his music has taken him to reside in London.
