Women of Folk
In the 1950s, there was an explosion of interest in folk music that inspired countless young people to pick up guitars and start creating their own songs. More than any other musical movement, folk music attracted women performers. Join us for a special celebration of the female folk singers who brought a new voice to music. Some of the legendary performers who will be featured in this exciting evening of rare performance include Mary Travers (of Peter Paul & Mary) singing the classic "Blowin' in the Wind," Joan Baez singing "Diamonds and Rust," Joni Mitchell singing "Big Yellow Taxi," Janis Ian singing "Society's Child" and "At Seventeen," Judy Collins singing "Both Sides Now" and "Someday Soon," Melanie singing "Beautiful People," and "Peace Will Come," plus Buffy Saint Marie, Odetta, Linda Ronstadt, and a host of others. When folk music initially became popular, the "big names" were men. However, women singer/songwriters soon found an audience. They sang old and new songs that voiced their political opinions and supported social causes, using their music as a platform to express themselves. This started a prolific time of songwriting and rediscovery of songs that portrayed the feelings and concerns of people from all walks of like throughout our country and especially spotlighted the concerns of the poor and disenfranchised. No folk music fan will want to miss this amazing Women's History Month event highlighting these legendary performers. Singing and clapping are welcome! (Running time: 110 minutes)
