Hollywood Heritage and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Present: Born In A Barn - The Development of Movie Studios in Hollywood
On Wednesday, May 9th at 7:30PM, Hollywood Heritage and The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will be presenting a special program as part of its celebration of National Historic Preservation Month. We will be devoting our May "Evening at the Barn" to a discussion of the significance of historic movie studios in Los Angeles.
The film industry, which came to Hollywood in 1911, became an economic engine for the city and has continued to shape the culture of the nation. From humble beginnings in vernacular buildings such as the Lasky-DeMille Barn to dedicated plants designed by some of the city's most famous architects and builders, the studios have become recognizable landmarks in the community.
HH will celebrate their history and discuss their continuing development by showing rare footage of the studios during the Golden Age, the characteristics of these complexes, and talking about the challenges of stewardship and continued growth today.
Among the presenters slated for the event are Richard Adkins, president of Hollywood Heritage, who will be giving an overview of the first generation of film making. Plus, Christy McAvoy, co-founder of HH and Historic Resources Group, will discuss the important physical characteristics of these dream factories and their context in SurveyLA. In addition, Adam Finer, HH Board Member and Screenwriting Professor at NYFA, will lead a discussion with studio representatives about the challenges of stewardship in the 21st century.
As always, we will be hosting our famous $1 raffle, with proceeds going to the HH Acquisition Fund. See you at The Barn!
