Mingish
Stephanie Nilles is a whirlwind combination of conservatory training and jump joint jubilation. She's collaborated with with the likes of Bobbie Mcferrin, Zach Brock (of Snarky Puppy), and Mike Dillon. She is a gold medalist of the Fischoff Competition and a musical firebrand of the finest order. She regularly wakes up to yell through the window at barking dogs, recently learned how the gear shifter works on her bicycle, and enjoys looking for deals on winestilsoldout.com. She is an American original, a full size explosion in a pint size package, and a total musical pyromaniac.
John "Dewey" Sampson is a rare musician indeed, his explorations involve instruments of as many different kinds as can be stacked in his back alley studio. He is a composer, arranger, improviser, and extremely finely tuned musical esthete. Skilled with ideophones, membranophones, aerophones, and mirlitons, he has made a return to Bass Violin in recent years to transform the imaginary folk totalé duo of Deakin Hicks into a genuine trio. He has won the Guinness World Record for longest running monthly residency in the town of Bellingham WA having performed monthly at the Temple Bar through each and every ownership for the last 79 years.
Julian Mcdonough is a joyful and glorious beatmaker. A master of beat division (how many times could you divide the number one with ever developing coherence?) he has the ability to play that most treasured thirteenth note: dynamics. As a ludicrously busy educator, sonic artist, father, and musical director of Bellingham's premier jazz showcase/workshop WJMAC, Julian's power animal is the sea cucumber. An unassuming alien art piece that can defensively vomit it's entire digestive tract towards its attacker, the cucumber will then spend the next ten hours meticulously turning itself outside in again. Julian does all this and more, but he keeps it all inside. You can hear it in his music.
Thomas Deakin enjoys riding his bicycle, meeting friendly dogs, and playing very long notes on tuba. He is the only American trained in the art of Soundationing, receiving instruction from visiting Estonian Premier Soundationist Piibe Kolka first in New Orleans, then New York, finally completing his first round of studies at the Unionersity of Soundationist Explorations in Tallinn Estonia. A sonic degenarte and obsessive multi-instrumentalist, he is a feral example of someone from a good family who's just gone a little off the rails.
These four will join together to collaborate on a re-imagining of one of America's greatest composers. Charles Mingus, voice of liberty, topping from the bottom of the band, he was a teacher and guide and crucible of tone and voicing, the joining of personalities toward a higher artistic goal. In this spirit his compositions will be presented for one night only at The Green Frog in Bellingham WA at an early evening sit down listening event. We will do our very best. It will be Mingish.
