--- Jessica Lewis Arts is a 501(c)(3) non profit dance company, presenting original choreography rooted in traditional modern techniques in New York City. Jessica Lewis Arts is a collaborative effort to create new and meaningful works that regard relationship, change, and personal identity. "Perpetuum Mobile: The City Disappeared" is a piece that Artistic Director Jessica Lewis originally conceived of while traveling across the country from her home in New York City, to live and teach in Los Angeles for a year.
The primary question addressed through this piece is the relationship that identity has with both place and time, and how these aspects impact one another. The piece is based on experiences of travel, living in new and unexpected circumstances and places, as well as facing questions of identity and how the impact of where we move changes how we move together and as individuals. The piece asks how we fit into the societal constructs in which we have intentionally and inadvertently placed ourselves, and how time and place change intentionality and quality of movement. We also look at the role of the individual, versus the role of the group in society.
The question of what is feminine strength? permeates this piece. How do we demonstrate it? What makes it unique? We continue to put forth a focus through this piece about the internalization of identity and all the aspects of life that lead to the formation, constant change, and development of identity.
