Celebrating the Female Voice
Come celebrate the female voice on an intimate evening of song!
Soprano Susan Payne O'Brien and conductor Nyela Basney will present a vocal recital highlighting the beauty and contributions of the often ignored female composers of past and present featuring Libby Larsen's virtuosic 'Try Me, Good King' a song cycle based on the last words of the Wives of Henry VIII as well as songs by Clara Schumann and Cecile Chamindade.
The evening will also feature a special guest appearance by the comic all female operatic company Forte Chicago.
Nyela Basney, Conductor/Pianist Equally at home in both the symphonic and operatic repertoires, Nyela Basney is known for her "fiery intensity" (Chicago Sun-Times) and "brilliance and dexterity". Excellence, authenticity, joy, and creative engagement with musicians and audiences alike are the hallmarks of Nyela Basney's two-decade career one that encompasses over 1,200 performances as a conductor and pianist and that has taken her to Lincoln Center, rural Louisiana, Chicago, Sarajevo, Rome, Scotland and Uruguay . . . Miss Basney is the Artistic Director of Opera at North Park University and founder and director (for 25 years) of the international chamber music festival Orvieto Musica, Inc. She attended the Eastman School of Music on a coveted Alumni Scholarship, receiving her undergraduate and graduate degrees with highest distinction.
Susan Payne O'Brien, Soprano Susan Payne sings, acts, and directs with a focus on the intersection of storytelling and musical performance. She fell in love with the possibilities of story at the Piven Theatre Workshop where she has directed, adapted, and taught for the past 22 years. She has taken her skills as a writer and director to The Piven Theatre, The Waters Project, 2nd Story, and CUBE. She is passionate about the development of vocal artists and has worked within the music schools and development programs of DePaul University, The Chicago College of Performing Arts, and The Santa Fe Opera. She is currently Artistic Director of Forte Chicago, an all-female, operatic and instrumental improvisational company. She is passionate about bringing visibility to female composers of the past and present. As a recitalist and vocalist she has appeared with The Chicago Chorale, The Musicians Club of Women, The Chicago Cultural Center, Links Hall and Forte Chicago. http://susanpayneobrien.com/
