At the beginning of the twentieth century, the San Gabriel Mountains were delightful for picnicking, camping or hiking, but when Angeles Crest Highway began to push through them in the 1930s, this idyllic natural setting was threatened. Two champions arose to defend their local mountains. Their campaign produced the Pacific Crest Trail. Dr. Terence Young, professor emeritus at Cal Poly Pomona and author of Heading Out: A History of American Camping, will recount how Clinton Clarke and A Warren Rogers fought to protect Americas Pacific Slope from development. Michele Zack and Mark Goldschmidt will host this lecture in the gardens of their Mediterranean-revival house, designed and built in 1922-3 by Frank Brown.
