Heartland: A Portrait of Survival - Omaha Film Festival
Heartland is a gripping and inspiring documentary about a small town in Southern Missouri that was hit by one of the deadliest and most destructive tornadoes in American history. It is a heartfelt snapshot of a close-knit Ozark Mountain community that must crawl from underneath the rubble and make sense of the destruction and loss associated with the storm.Heartland chronicles the efforts of one woman as she sets out to collect and return thousands of photos displaced by the May 22 tornado. In some cases, these photos represent all that is left from life before the storm. This film weaves together the stories of nine families as they traverse a now unfamiliar landscape in the hopes of recovering some sense of home.Seamlessly blending together home movie footage, police dispatch, news broadcasts and footage shot within weeks after the storm, Heartland tells a story of survival and nostalgia.Heartland is a reminder to us all that we should never lose sight of what is truly important in life. You can build a new house, you can buy a new car, you can buy new clothes but you can't get your memories back once they are gone.
