Sacramento Heritage Dessert Tour: J Street/Midtown Streetcar Tour
Sacramento Heritage Inc. and Midtown Association present a guided tour of J Street, Midtown Sacramento's historic "main street" and former streetcar route. To sweeten the experience, this visit to about 30 historically and architecturally significant buildings will include two stops for dessert, included in the ticket price.

Our tour begins in front of Sacramento's Memorial Auditorium and heads east along J Street, stopping to appreciate historic architecture dating from late 19th century Italianate mansions to 1950s International Style commercial buildings. But there's more to the story than just buildings; we will talk about the people and events that happened in Midtown, including saloons and train stations, churches and boutiques, breweries and feminist bookstores. Historian William Burg, president of Sacramento Heritage Inc., will lead the tour and share the stories of J Street.

The tour covers approximately two miles in a leisurely 90 minutes, including a midway dessert stop at Rick's Dessert Diner, where you can select any slice of cake or pie as your first dessert. At our second and final dessert stop, Identity Coffees, choose any flavor of gelato you like.

This walk will be slow and casual, but comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The tour is on public sidewalks and businesses, all locations we will visit are ADA accessible.

RECOMMENDED PARKING: We recommend that you park at the East End Garage, 1214 17th Street (entry between L and Capitol.) Parking on Saturday is $2 (cash only) for unlimited time. The garage is 0.3 miles from Memorial Auditorium.

Proceeds from the tour benefit Sacramento Heritage Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We work in conjunction with the City of Sacramento to encourage the restoration and celebration of Sacramento's historic places, via our Landmark Plaque program, self-guided walking tour app, Historic Places grant program, and other projects. Tour is held in conjunction with the Midtown Association, a 501(c)(6) business association/nonprofit.
