STEVE KATZ
A founding member of the Grammy-winning band Blood, Sweat & Tears, Steve Katz, will offer an evening of acoustic songs and stories at Phippsburg Congregational Church on Saturday, May 5, at 7:30.
In addition to being a member of the chart-topping band that won three Grammys (including Album of the Year) and sold millions of albums, Steve was also a founder of The Blues Project, and became a producer for stars like Lou Reed. He has played iconic festivals like Woodstock and Monterey.
A wonderful raconteur who recently wrote his memoirs, Steve's life and stories are populated by the likes of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Grace Slick, Beatles-producer George Martin, and many others.
At age 15, he studied guitar with folk legend Dave Van Ronk and bluesman Rev. Gary Davis and was soon part of Greenwich Village's great folk revival, learning from blues elders like Mississippi John Hurt and Son House, and playing in bands with Al Kooper, Maria Muldaur and The Lovin Spoonful's John Sebastian. After Blood Sweat & Tears, he went on to produce albums for Lou Reed and formed another band, American Flyer, with members of The Velvet Underground and Pure Prairie League. His love of Irish music led him into a new chapter of his career as a record executive (Mercury Records, Green Linnet) working almost exclusively with Irish musicians including groups like The Horslips.
The show will be presented in the historic 1802 Phippsburg Congregational Church. Refreshments will be served at intermission.
