Council members are invited to a Lunch 'n' Learn Wednesday, May 16, 2018 on HR and immigration. At a recent Council meeting, one of our members shared his challenges as an employer when finding out that an employee's immediate family member was involved in a serious car accident. At the time of the accident, the employee was not covered by provincial health insurance. While the employee's situation was not the responsibility of the employer, it was a sad circumstance with impacts felt by the employer, co-workers and clients. Are you aware of the situations our temporary foreign workers face? Do you understand how they are working in Canada and their relationship to our systems and services? As employers, do you know your legal rights and obligations when hiring temporary foreign workers? What about when they suffer personal hardship? We are pleased to welcome Rebecca Norton, Immigration Lawyer with dRN Law LLP, and Rachel West, Employment Lawyer with Dunphy, Best, Blocksom LLP, who will provide their expertise. Rebecca and Rachel will cover the basics plus answer your questions. Title: What you need to know as an employer of temporary foreign workers Topics covered: - Ensuring foreign nationals have proper work authorization - Hiring international students and post-graduation work permit holders - Requirement to provide private health insurance and other benefits - Accommodating personal leave requests - Handling work permit extensions and expirations - Dealing with terminations of temporary foreign workers - Q & A
***Once registered, you will receive an invoice for $15 (non-refundable) to cover the cost of lunch.****
