Moon Over Buffalo by Ken Ludwig
The madcap farce Moon Over Buffalo by Ken Ludwig centers on George and Charlotte Hay, fading Broadway stars of the 1950s. At the moment, theyre playing Private Lives and Cyrano De Bergerac in rep in Buffalo, New York with five actors. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by Georges dalliance with a young ingénue, they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Unfortunately for George and Charlotte, everything that could go wrong does go wrong: Charlotte storms out in a jealous huff, George goes on a bender, Howard, their daughters clueless fiancé is mistaken for Frank Capra, and then General Patton, and no one is quite sure which play they are actually performing for the Matinee. Charlottes mother -who is also in the company and who is quite deaf- adds to the confusion by getting pretty much every piece of information she is given completely wrong.
Directed by Michael Koegel, the Playhouses Artistic director, Moon Over Buffalo is a classic American farce in the tradition of Noises Off and Lend Me a Tenor, involving a series of mistaken identities, six slamming doors and a lot of slapstick comedy and pratfalls. The cast lead by John Remington and Elaine Young as George and Charlotte Hay (the roles were originated by Phillip Bosco and Carol Burnett on Broadway), were seen on the Phoenicia Playhouse stage last year as the wacky, oblivious parents in Prelude to a Kiss. Geneva Turner, last seen at the Playhouse in WWII Radio Christmas, plays their daughter Roz, whos engaged to a local weatherman (Will Anderson), who gets mistaken for Frank Capra and eventually winds up gagged, tied up and shoved into a closet. Rounding out the cast are Austin Carrothers, Caitlin Connelly, Will anderson, Daniella Goldberg and Rob Rowe.
