Artist Bios:
Betany Coffland, mezzo-soprano, has had her performances hailed by Opera News as "extremely fine" and "a joy to watch,". Ms. Coffland was most recently a Resident Artist with Opera San Jose from 2008-2012. With the company, she recently sang the roles of Siebel, Idamante, Rosina, Angelina, Cherubino, Dorabella, Olga, Carmen, and Elle in Poulenc's La Voix Humaine.
A graduate from The Juilliard School and New England Conservatory of Music, she received the Bori Grant for foreign music study in the Czech language where she studied in Prague. Ms. Coffland was a prize winning finalist in the both the Irene Dalis Competition and the East Bay Opera League Competition. She won the Grand Prize at the Margaret Kimball Competition with Rimrock Opera, and first place in the Treasure Valley Concerto Competition.
An intrepid student of chamber repertoire, Ms. Coffland enjoys combining hand selected lesser known and new works with classics to create enchanting recitals which have captivated audiences in California, Massachusetts, Missouri, Kansas, Idaho and New York. As a soloist she has preformed in prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and Boston's historic Jordan Hall. Upcoming performances for the 2012-2013 season have Ms. Coffland singing the mezzo soloist in Mozart's Coronation Mass with the Sacramento Philharmonic, the title role of Carmen in concert with the Diablo Symphony, and a Salon Recital with Opera San Luis Obispo.
Pianist Julie Koontz is based in New York City as a performer, coach and teacher. She graduated from the collaborative piano masters program at The Juilliard School and studied piano in Mainz, Germany in conjunction with a Rotary International Scholarship. She has performed in Prague at the Ameropa Chamber Music Festival and studied in Paris on a Bori Grant through The Juilliard School. A native of Kansas and graduate of the University of Kansas, Ms. Koontz has performed as soloist with the Kansas National Guard band and the University of Kansas Symphony Orchestra. She has coached and performed at the Masterworks Festival in Winona Lake, Indiana and performed at the Aspen Music Festival in Aspen, Colorado and the Meadowlark Music Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska. Julie Koontz and her husband live in New York City with their two young daughters.
