Songs of the Phoenix
Sonoma Matsuri is proud to present Songs of the Phoenix - an evening of music for the shakuhachi (traditional Japanese bamboo flute) featuring shakuhachi Grandmaster Riley Lee (Sydney, Australia) and local shakuhachi performer and teacher, Elliot Kallen. In a series of solos, duets, and ensemble pieces, the sounds of the shakuhachi will honor the ongoing rebirth of Northern California following the devastating fires of 2017. Special guest musicians will join in for this rare opportunity to showcase the versatility and haunting beauty of the shakuhachi as both an instrument of Zen meditation and an incredibly expressive instrument in modern music. The concert will highlight the superb acoustics of Sonoma Countys renowned Church of One Tree (adjacent to Juilliard Park in downtown Santa Rosa). Refreshments provided by The Taste of Tea, Healdsburg. This dont miss event is sponsored by Sonoma Matsuri, Northern Californias premier Festival of Japanese Arts and Culture, that takes place the following day in Juilliard Park.
