Horus "Goshawk's Grasp" Bottle Release
"Goshawk's Grasp" is a big 13.2% imperial stout. It is named after the scar on my left hand from the talon of Mocha, the goshawk my dad had during my youth, who is depicted on the label. I have been getting a lot of requests to brew my imperial stout (pastry stout) base that you may have tasted in beers like my Great Maple series at Wakefest weekend, Festively Plump, Civil Predator, Yeah You Know Me with Magnify, and most recently Pastry Method with Moksa, to name a few. I wanted to make a special beer for the people who have enjoyed these past stouts, and I really went for it ingredient wise on this first go around with the Goshawk series.
This beer has three pounds of roasted hazelnuts per gallon and a pound of Geisha coffee per BBL. If you know about the cost of those two adjuncts, then you can see why this is the most expensive thing I have ever made. I did not want to let the price of ingredients hold me back for this release. This is a luxurious beer that will not be reproduced and the price reflects the high cost of the ingredients I used. This beer is not for everyone, it is an expensive beer with expensive ingredients. It is not a pastry stout using cheap artificial extracts as I do not believe in using those. This is a stout with a whole lot of my favorite nuts (hazelnuts) used to get the flavor out of them the real way and the most expensive coffee on the planet.
This incredibly dark beer was boiled for over five hours to achieve a very thick, viscous base for these lavish adjuncts. The result is a stout with an incredible aroma, filled with hazelnut flavor, vanilla, marshmallow, pronounced sweetness, light roast from the amazing coffee, both milk and dark chocolate cake, mild hints of dark fruit, and most importantly notes of pastries from your local bakery. This is not barrel aged, although a barrel aged version of it will be released in the future. This will fall under the "Fresh Ales" moniker. I will probably brew 4 or 5 non-barrel aged stouts per year going forward, mainly because it is what people request from me the most via e-mail and social media. Who knows what the adjuncts will be on future stouts of this nature, but they will all be special, never reproduced, and again only brewed once in a while. This beer is packaged in 650 ml bottles. The original artwork was done by the talented Spring Whitaker.
Bottles must be picked up in person. There will be no shipping. The pickup window is on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 9 am to 4 pm at 4040 Calle Platino, Suite 120, Oceanside, CA 92056. However, all bottles that are not picked up during this window will be able to picked up at one of the next two bottle releases, whenever those might be sometime in between May-August, but then they will be surrendered back to the brewery if not picked up during that second release after this one, no exceptions.
If you do not live nearby, then no sweat, I am allowing proxies, so find a friend or relative nearby that can pick them up for you instead. A person can proxy for multiple people if need be. There is no problem with that. Please provide the name of your proxy if somebody other than yourself will be picking up your bottle(s) during checkout. Each person picking up bottles will need to show appropriate identification and be over 21 years of age. An important note is that you cannot change the name of your proxy once the sale is complete. I ran into this issue a few times last release and do not want to deal with that headache again. Once you name an original proxy during the checkout process, that proxy or yourself will need to pick up the bottles, you cannot go back into BPT and make changes at any point, no exceptions.
Much like the Oceanside's Eleven release a few months ago, there is a very limited bottle count. I am going to try a 4 bottles per person limit this time around. With the bottle cost being on the higher side because of the adjuncts, I think this limit will be appropriate and allow a lot more people to get their hands on some. While this beer is expected to sell out quickly, it is not expected to in just two seconds again.
The limited edition glassware for this release is a custom goblet with double sided big-head Horus logos in reflective metallic gold. The tee shirts are black with a heather gray logo with sizes ranging from S-3XL. Both these glasses and shirts will be for sale during the release while supplies last for $20 each. These colors and styles will never be reproduced. They can both be seen on the Instagram page. They are CASH only. Sorry, but the line will go much quicker with just cash and there is a bank two blocks away if need be at the last minute. Glassware limits to be determined day of release and I might be passing out tickets/numbers for those depending on what the initial line for pickups looks like at 9am.
See you on April 28th...cheers!
