ASCE COPRI Seattle Chapter Monthly Dinner Meeting - April 25, 2018
Topic: Kitsap Transit Recent Developments
Description: Director of Marine Services for Kitsap Transit, Darrell E. Bryan, will give an overview of Kitsap Transit, recent developments regarding passenger-only ferries, and plans for future. John Waterhouse, a Principal at Elliott Bay Design Group, will speak briefly about some of the vessel projects that are underway and their interface with existing and planned docking facilities.
Speaker(s): Darrell E. Bryan Kitsap Transit Director of Marine Services
After 15 years serving on the Board of Interferry, the worldwide voice of the ferry industry, Darrell Bryan was appointed their CEO in 2016. Bryan is a subject matter expert in the maritime industry and is sought out as a consultant to assist businesses with special needs. Bryan currently sits on the Board of Visit Seattle and Un-Cruise Adventures, and is President of the Seattle Historic Waterfront Association.
Darrell Bryan was a leader in the start-up of Clipper Navigation, Inc. and led the company as its President and CEO for 29 years. Victoria Clipper started as a passenger-only ferry operator providing service between Victoria and Seattle, expanding seasonal service to the San Juan Islands. Bryan grew the company into Clipper Vacations, a full service international travel business providing tour and hotel package sales and special destination excursions in the Pacific Northwest. For the company to continue to thrive, Bryan was heavily involved in regional, national and international regulatory issues that affected the tourism and maritime industries. No other company had been able to operate ferry service to Canada without government subsidy, and the Clipper has served more than eight million customers since its inception in 1986.
John Waterhouse, PE, PMP, FSNAME Elliott Bay Design Group Principal in Charge
John Waterhouse was a founding partner of Elliott Bay Design Group and has over 30 years of experience in naval architecture and marine engineering. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to the passenger vessel industry through innovative design and engineering achievement. His ferry experience includes design work for Washington State Ferries, Alaska Marine Highway System, Staten Island Ferry Authority, Beaver Island Michigan, The Steamship Authority and Fisher Island development in Miami. He has prepared transportation studies for the Alaska Marine Highway System, Pierce County Department of Public Works, and for the Inter-Island Ferry Authority in Alaska.
John is a strong advocate for environmentally-responsible stewardship of our waters and coastlines through the use of "green" technologies in vessel design, construction and operation. He supports the use of improved propulsion systems, recycled materials, low-energy equipment and an eco-friendly plan for disposal at the end of a vessel's useful life. He has proposed that the shipping industry adopt an environmental certification program for vessels similar to those certification programs for buildings that have been developed in the US and Europe.
He is an active member in several maritime professional and technical societies, and is well-versed on regulatory issues. He is extensively published and is frequently called upon to provide expert testimony in legal cases involving a wide range of issues.
