Sometime artistic license gives history a more vibrant color. Here are some events you may not be familiar with but are worth further research.
Beneath the Wide Wide Heaven Dir. Hisham Bizri (USA 2016) 15 min Short Documentary
Pier Paolo Pasolini, Marxist, Catholic, and gay, plays the role of the director as conveyor of human experience in this experimental documentary film. The director is constantly watching, thinking, and feeling the world events around him as he films the Passion of Jesus as well as mundane and historic events, all in the hope that the film, once done, will be whole and sufficient to convey human suffering and decadence through interconnections. But on the director is the burden, of showing through the art of cinema, the human experience of transcendence.
Monument Dir. Marcin Gizycki (Poland 2016) 2min 30s
A secret life of monumental sculptures from The Soviet Military Cemetery in Warsaw, Poland.
Play it Again Son! Dir. Tommy Conlon (Ireland 2014) 19 min
A period film set in 1950s Ireland. It is a satire inspired by the life of a politically militant but religiously pious patriot.
Big Man Dir. Michelle Stewart/Peter Stewart (South Africa 2016) 11 min
The animated film Big Man posits a situation where a "Big Man" atones for his inhumanity. In this instance the "Big Man" is the Apartheid-era Prime Minister of South Africa, BJ Vorster. As in the Old Testament source, the film briefly summarizes the time in office of subsequent heads-of-state. The film is based on chapters two and four of The Book of Daniel of The Old Testament. Nebuchadnezzar, the King of Babylon, has troubled dreams that can only be interpreted by the Hebrew prophet Daniel. Nebuchadnezzar refuses to heed the warning explicit in Daniel's reading of his dreams, so God sends him to live as a beast in the wilderness to atone for his sins. In Big Man, former South African Prime Minister, BJ Vorster is cast as Nebuchadnezzar. The film uses a variety of traditional and digital animation techniques, including stop-motion paper-cut-out animation, cel animation, Flash animation and paint-on-glass animation.
128 Dir. Onur Atalay enol (Turkey 2017) 4mins 17secs
Across Long River Dir. Irene Jiang (USA 2017) 11mins 15secs
