Us and Them Short Film Program
Us and Them Run Time: 1 hour 16 min Saturday May 26th 11:30 AM 8 Euro/5 concession Cinema of the Damn'd at 301 Overtoom
Without noticing it, I had programmed two films having to do with Islam and Christianity solidarity and two films about police forces abusing their power...I wonder what the subliminal connection may be?...perhaps my subconscious is in tune with two very current concerns in the global zeitgeist? Alexandra Nakelski
Les Misérables Dir. Ladj Ly (France 2017) 16 min
trailer: https://vimeo.com/248496858
With a gun at his belt and a truncheon in his hand, Pento has just joined the Seine-Saint-Denis anti-crime brigade. With his teammates, he develops specific methods.
A great study of tribalism that occurs behind the "Blue Shield"...
Watu Wote (All of Us)* Dir. Katja Benrath (Germany/Kenya 2017) 22 min
Us and Them Dir. Yordi Capo (Mexico 2017) 18 min
García is a riot police officer and witnesses the irony that his colleagues inflict more violence than they were hired to prevent. He needs this job to survive but in some existential moments, he wonders if he is fighting on the right side?
The Deluge Dir. Mazin M Sherabayani (Iraq/UK 2017) 20 min Short Documentary
Sherabayani tells a story that has been continuously ignored in the coverage of ISIS: a unity between Christian and Muslim Kurds in the face of the worst brutality imaginable. As with his previous work, Mazin takes care not to make this an easily corrupted call for Western military intervention - something that would greatly undermine the humble community resilience which is so well depicted - and something which a great many films on Iraq/Syria fail to take into account. Jack Brindelli
Mazin's wonderful short from last season, Dyab, has gone on to play at festivals all around the globe. Mazin is the true spirit of positive change through the art of cinema. To educate, enlighten and endure! This is one filmmaker to follow!
