Dystopian Quadrilogy II: The Singularity
The Singularity 1 Hour 10 min People reduced to binary codes...are we already but a program within a program?
Real Artists- Dir. Cameo Wood (USA 2017) 12min
Against all odds, Sophia Baker just scored her dream interview at the world-famous Semaphore Animation Studios -- whod have thought a fan edit of one of their hit films could land her a shot at a job? But when she meets arch, mysterious executive Anne Palladon, she soon learns all is not as she expects behind the curtain. Every instinct Sophia has ever had about art in filmmaking is about to be challenged.
Based on Nebula, Hugo and World Fantasy Award-winning author Ken Lius short story of the same name, Real Artists asks a poignant question: In a dystopian near-future where big data, AI and natural language processing learn and create quickly and at massive scale, what role can a single artist play? Is Sophia a creative rebel who can make a difference? Or is the situation more serious than that?
Human imagination commodified...is this science fiction or a historical piece? AN
I Want Pluto to the a Planet Again Dir. Marie Amachoukeli (France 2017) 13 min
A transhumanist romance in the near future. A young boy of modest origins, Marcus, an H-, falls madly in love with an H+.
A huge part of my research for my PhD is on the transhumanist movement especially the work of Ray Kurzweil...what I find so sad is that people believe that fusing people with machines is somehow going to finally equalize mankind...unfortunately the physicality will never transcend innate instinct to categorize into a hierarchy. This short tugs at the heartstrings reminding the viewer that with as much technology and progress we come to experience...there seems to be no cure for loneliness. AN

999999999 Director: Karim Azimi Iran 2016 10mins With a seemingly endless line of men facing what appears to be an infinite stone-staircase, this hellish metaphor for the apparently never-ending conveyor belt of human suffering makes for grimly compelling viewing. As the men, surrounded by flickering televisual images of 24 hour news and eternal invitations to consume, we are left wondering, who, if anyone, can break this chain?
