Critical Northwest 2018: A Trip to the Moon is a volunteer-produced temporary art filled city, taking place from July 9-15. Since its humble beginnings in 2003 as a simple weekend getaway, Critical has bloomed into a full week-long experience. The event is complete with large scale interactive theme camps, a central hub with ice sales and free coffee, a daily schedule of workshops, and over $15,000 worth of granted art projects.
2018 Theme: Fascination with space travel has captured the imaginations of humans for centuries, and nothing throughout history has peeked humanity's interests more than speculation about life on the moon. One of the earliest (and by far most unique) films ever to be made tells the tale of a group of scientists so fascinated to discover what the moon holds that they shot themselves out of a cannon to get there.
A Trip to the Moon was painstakingly created over one hundred years ago. Each of the over 30,000 frames were hand painted to create a color film, decades before technicolor. The director built a glass studio in his garden, using natural light to capture the exquisite detail of the handcrafted set built by crew and actors alike. This movie is the perfect embodiment of the spirit of our community. Someone stared up at the sky, wondering for so long and with such intensity that they drew others in and they came together to create a uniquely captivating experience.
