Beyond the 2010 Olympics- Whistler 2020: Moving Toward a Sustainable Future
Whistler is an internationally renown all-season resort community in British Columbia, Canada. A leader in community sustainability, Whistler was the first Canadian community to adopt the Natural Step framework. Building on a 2002 vision, the resort community recently published its 2020 plan, setting a 15 year vision and strategic plan emphasizing the need for a sustainable future. The plan is comprehensive, addressing the social, cultural, environmental and financial needs of the community. In addition, the community has set a target of achieving sustainability by 2060.
As a true community-wide plan, Whistler 2020 is the result of extensive public participation and engagement, and is being implemented by organizations throughout the resort. The Plan incorporates The Natural Step framework at all levels, from vision to daily decision making. It sets goals for community prosperity and gauges progress with the Whistler 2020 monitoring and reporting program.
What lessons does the Whistler experience offer communities in Oregon and Southwest Washington? Esther Speck, Whistler 2020 Manager, will share the process which Whistler used, how members of the public were engaged, and tips for success, and pitfalls to avoid.
Esther Speck (MBA,MRM) is the Whistler 2020 manager for the Resort Municipality of Whistler and is also an independent consultant focusing on sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.
