AirDance New Mexico presents Asterian aerial-dance-theater exploration of the constellations of the night sky, and of the now-ancient Greek myths surrounding themmyths whose every character is an archetype, and whose every hero and monster and villain can be recognized as some version of ourselves.
In this groundbreaking new production, ten masters of the art of aerialist dance will collaborate with two masters of the art of experimental musical composition, for an evening of unforgettable physical storytelling, using only their bodies, trapezes, hanging silks, and other equipment, along with wardrobe, light, and sound, to tell the story of OrionOrion, in myth, a giant, sometimes good, sometimes evil, a hunterOrion, whose image was preserved by his lover Artemis in the sky after his death.
Interspersed with this story will be other constellations, with other mythsAtlas, CapricornGeminiLiliththe PleiadesScorpiothe worlds of their stories and Orions story explored through the costumed forms of aerialists Cortney Baca, Christina Cavaleri, Diana Delgado, Monica DeMarco, Joanna Furgal, Tara Kolberg, Ronnie Gialouris, Zachary Sears, Gina Shorten, and Kristen Woods, all acclaimed performers who have performed in many successful shows.
Soundtracking Asteri, in a cross-media collaboration with AirDances aerialists, will be composer-musician Charis Hurst, her startling music making powerful use of drums, in collaboration with composer-musician Monica DeMarco, who will also perform as an aerialist.
Asteri will be directed by Joanna Furgal, member of AirDance since 2011, and director of many wonderful AirDance productions including The Outtakes and Entomography.
