About the Speakers:
While Lisa has kept backyard flocks of poultry since her college days in a co-housing community, she did not become a serious student of poultry breeding and genetics until she retired and began raising purebred chickens. Lisa quickly became interested in preservation of heritage breeds, and realized that these original homestead birds were at risk unless they became more integral to a healthy food system. Her desire to provide families with an alternative local supply for healthy, productive chickens led to her interest in helping form Peninsula Poultry Breeders. Lisa's formal background is in biological and behavioral sciences and her varied career includes stints as a wildlife biologist, high school biology teacher, and public affairs director for a large municipal agency.
Stuart and his partner Michele started in poultry driven by the desire to know where their food came from and how it was processed. After learning about the living conditions of industrial poultry in the United States and the sanitation failings of many major processing plants, they set out learn how to raising their own poultry. Stuart was a founding member of the Western Washington Poultry Farmer Cooperative (WWPFC) [Formerly Kitsap Poultry Growers Cooperative) (KPGC)] and serves as President and as Equipment Coordinator for the Co-ops poultry processing equipment rental program. Together with Michele he has taught the Poultry Processing from Pasture to Plate workshop sponsored by WSU Clallam County Extension. Together they run a small farm in Silverdale and have been breeding Jersey Giant and Delaware chickens since 2008.
