Race: The Al Young Story (2017) Short Documentary  20:27 min English    USA     Directed by Rick Quan    

As the first Asian American world champion drag racer, Al Young has broken many stereotypes. But before he could find success on the racetrack, he had to overcome a learning disability. Find out how he not only did that but used his disability to become a world champion.

Rick Quan is an Emmy award winning television sportscaster with more than 30 years of broadcast experience. His first short documentary, "Dancing through Life: The Dorothy Toy Story" was shown at numerous festivals in 2017. It captured the Audience award at the Boston Asian American Film Festival, was named Best Short Documentary by Asians on Film and won the Silver Lei at the Honolulu Film Awards.

A teenage soccer phenom skyrockets to stardom like no one before him, becoming the first ethnic Vietnamese player to represent the United States. Then, in an unprecedented move, he leaves for Asia, his star fading into obscurity.

Lee, the footballer son of two nations who traveled the world to find his footing. In a sport defined by winning, his story reminds us that its instead how you deal with the unexpected turns of sport and of life that matter most.

In this 1980s coming-of-age story set to pulsing hip-hop music, a Filipino-American teen discovers her identity through a budding talent for turntablism.

A little-known but lasting explosion of hip-hop culture grew out of the Filipino-American community of 1980s San Francisco. This film takes us into the beat of an aspiring mobile DJ crew in '84, as 14-year-old Vanessa, sick of the the constraints and boring piano lessons in her conservative Filipino-American household, starts teaching herself on the sly how to scratch on her older brothers turntables. We follow Ness as she discovers her talents and place in the local music scene of the era.
