The Last of the Red Hot Lovers opens on Friday April 20 and plays for three weeks, closing on Sunday May 6. Thursday shows are at 7 P.M., Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 P.M., and Sunday shows are at 2 P.M. There will be no Sunday show on April 22nd. In addition, the show on Thursday April 26th is a fund-raiser for the Willits Senior Center. Tickets for that show are available by calling Pat Collins at 459-4594. Tickets for all other shows can be purchased at Mazahar Boutique, 38 South Main Street in Willits, or online at brownpapertickets.com, or by telephoning Brown Paper Tickets at 800-838-3006. ***This play is not recommended for children under age 13*** ****There will be a $5 discount at the door for students with ID, subject to seat availability. Advance tickets online, by 800# phone and at Mazahar close 2 hours before the show opens, so get your seats early or show up at the door to claim any unsold seats. This series is all Reserved Seating. If you wish to have Accessible Seating in Row A ~ no stairs ~ please make sure to select Row A seats when making your purchase. The Last of the Red Hot Lovers is Neil Simons 1969 comedy hit about Barney Cashman, a married, middle-aged New York City restaurant owner who feels that life is passing him by. In order to stop times winged chariot and to help himself to some of the free love that has been flowing freely throughout the 1960s, Cashman hatches a plot. He will invite attractive women to his mothers apartment (when his mother is not home) for the purpose of sex and love, or love and sex if its a good day. All three of his romantic adventures go wildly wrong.
First theres Elaine, a jaded player with an unbridled libido and far more realistic grasp on the basics of adultery than Barney.  When Barney turns into a poet-philosopher, seeking in this fleshly liaison a way to justify the ways of God to man, Elaine is put off and the afternoon fizzles. Strike one.

Then theres Bobbi, a would-be actress without an ounce of talent. In this escapade, Barney tries sticking to the fundamentals, but Bobbie has so many sob-stories about abducted dogs, failed auditions, creepy ex-boyfriends, Nazi theatrical agents, and other phantasms from the show biz underworld of the 1960s, that he and the lovely blond bombshell fail to connect. Strike two.  

Finally theres Jeanette, the wife of Barneys best friend Mel. Jeanette and Mel have been having marital problems and so Jeanette shows up at Mrs. Cashmans apartment, where she unleashes a virtual Niagra Falls of angst, guilt, depression and existential despair. For Cashman, its not exactly a turn-on. Nevertheless he perseveres valiantly, until forced to confront Jeanettes final verdict: I dont find you physically attractive. Strike three, and its time to head to the showers.

Neil Simons The Last of the Red Hot Lovers presents the shadowy underbelly of the romantic fallacy of the 1960s:  the Playboy fallacy, the free love fallacy.  As a man, you can bed, or try to bed, various wildflowers of physical beauty, but in the end you always have to confront the reality that the woman in question is a real person, with real quirks, real issues and real problems. If that were not true, what would she be doing sitting next to you on your mothers couch?

This production of The Last of the Red Hot Lovers is directed by Don Samson and features performances by two of Mendocino Countys most talented actors. The role of Barney Cashman is being played by Rod Grainger. Each of the three ladies in the show are being played by his wife, Kelly Kesey.  Grainger and Kesey will be remembered by Willits audiences for their work in the 2014 WCT production of The Angel of Chatham Square.
